History of Red Gate

We would like to offer a special thanks to David Culbert for providing the history of Red Gate.    Thanks, Dad!  = )

A visionary is a wonderful and progressive spirit that possesses the highest potential of changing the world for the betterment of many.

One such man invested this adventurous spirit, and life changed for his family in ways that fostered endless blessing and the warmest of memories. At age 29, Francis Lee Culbert (Slim) moved to Woods Bay, Montana in 1939.  He had dreams, plans, and plenty of experience when it came to hard work. Earning a living through construction most of his life, he and his wife, Bessie (Peg), raised their three children at Woods Bay, Montana; near the East shore of the largest natural freshwater lake West of the Mississippi, Flathead Lake.

Slim purchased a section of land and began his dream of building a community, Red Gate Village. He filed the family Articles of Incorporation with the State of Montana at Woods Bay in November of 1963, and held the title of President of the corporation. The marker, or identifying feature, of the location was a Large Red Gate leading to the barn at the top of the hill on Flathead Lake’s East shore, Highway 35, 4.5 miles South of Bigfork, Montana.

The 160 acre section of land provided a fresh drinking water source that would provide some or the best water in the state. Slim’s dream was to capitalize on the potential of Flathead Lake’s scenic beauty at Woods Bay.

A grocery store, a large water system, a laundromat, a gas station, a travel trailer park, and mobile home court were the humble beginnings of Red Gate Village and the core of Red Gate Incorporated.

His vision was birthed into reality. Many years of dream work by Slim, his son Charles Lee, and his two oldest grandsons (Douglas Lee and David), plus many younger grandchildren, grew into Red Gate Village at Woods Bay.

Slim Culbert successfully followed his vision until his death in 1976.  His eldest son, Charles Lee Culbert (Lee), gained the title of President of Red Gate, and was humorously referred to as “Mayor” by local residents until he retired.

Red Gate’s family corporation became inactive in 1995. The sale of Red Gate transferred to the new owner in 2003.  Red Gate Incorporated’s President, Lee Culbert, passed away in 2015.

Now, after two decades, Slim’s Great Grandson, Aaron Lee Culbert, has once again revived and restored the name “Red Gate” in a new venture called, Red Gate Creative, LLC.  He surely carries on the visionary spirit of his Great Grandfather.
